The first Catholic missionaries to Hawaii arrived from France in 1827 and built a mission on land donated by King Kamameha III. The priests dedicated the new foundation to Notre-Dame de la Paix, patron of their order, the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Near the spot the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace was dedicated August 15, 1843. The Cathedral celebrates its anniversary August 16, since August 15 is the Feast of the Assumption. And instead of honoring Our Lady of Peace on July 9, as does the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts in Paris, the Hawaiians follow the old Spanish date of January 24. The city of Toledo had long celebrated the apparition of the Virgin to St. Ildephonsus (d. 667) the day after his feast day, January 23. In 1085, to celebrate the Moors' return of Toledo cathedral to the Christians on January 23, Alfonso VI rededicated the Virgin's feast day to Nuestra Señora de la Paz. Centuries later, the Spanish spread the devotion around the world. In Honolulu Cathedral, there is a bronze replica above the main altar of the wooden statue of Our Lady of Peace at the Sacred Hearts Convent in Paris.
