First Sunday in June

Virgen de Casbas, Ayerbe, Huesca, Aragón, Spain

The Virgin is said to have come from Casbas in France looking for the town of Ayerbe, which adopted her as its special protector. The wooden statue dates from the early 1100s. Today's festivities commemorate the miraculous rain of June 1, 1640, which ended a devastating drought. The people processed the the Holy Image from its rural chapel to St. Peter's Abbey in Ayerbe, where it remained for nine days. On the last day, June 1, people from all the villages of the region joined together, as they do today, to carry the Virgin back to her Chapel of Casbas. They had not yet returned to their homes when the crop-saving rain began. In thanksgiving, they vowed to repeat the procession annually. In 1981, the date was changed to the first Sunday in June.
