August 14

Notre-Dame du Scex, Saint-Maurice, Valais, Switzerland

Nestled against a cliff face (a scex, pron. "seh") 400 feet above the town and Abbey of Saint-Maurice, the Chapel of Our Lady of Scex counts over 1400 years since its founding by Benedictine hermit St. Amatus in 611. In the chapel of the 1600s, extensively remodeled in the 1700s and 1950s, an enthroned Virgin and Child from the 1200s occupies a niche high above the altar. Both of the painted wood figures wear crowns, and the Virgin holds an orb, possibly a fruit signifying her role as the New Eve. On August 14, the night before the Feast of the Assumption, pilgrims gather for prayers at the Abbey Basilica, then climb the 484 steps to the chapel for midnight mass. (Information and picture from the Abbey's web site, www.abbaye-stmaurice.ch.)
