September 10

Saint Mary at the Elms, Ipswich, Suffolk, England, UK

In 1538, agents of Henry VIII destroyed the ancient shrine of Our Lady of Grace in Ipswich and took its statue to London to be burned. But in 1550, some Englishmen en route to Naples took shelter from a storm at Nettuno, in Latium, and decided to give its people a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child they had with them. On its back is an Old English inscription, "Thou art gracious." It is thought that this statue of the "Madonna delle Grazie," still revered in Nettuno as town patron, came from the shrine at Ipswich. On September 10, 2002, the Anglican bishop blessed a replica carved by local artist Robert Mellamphy and installed it in the church of St. Mary at the Elms. An annual exchange of pilgrims has evolved between the Madonna's two shrines. On the first weekend in May, a group from Ipswich joins the traditional celebration in Nettuno; on the last weekend, Italian pilgrims join the annual procession from St. Mary at the Elms to the site of the original shrine in Lady Lane.
