September 12

Holy Name of Mary, Roman Catholic Church

After Jan Sobieski, having entrusted his army to Mary, drove back the Turks from Vienna on September 12, 1683, Pope Innocent XI extended this feast, observed in Spain since 1513, to the whole Church. Until it was dropped in 1969, the feast of the Holy Name of Mary was observed on the Sunday after September 8 (Nativity of Mary). In 2000 it returned to the Catholic calendar on September 12.
