Below the fortress of Shkodra stood a church of the 400s containing a fresco of the "Blessed Lady" cheek to cheek with her child. In 1467, the image disappeared from the wall. Meanwhile, in Genazzano, Italy, townspeople witnessed a thin plaster icon of the Madonna descend in a cloud. They enshrined the miraculous image in the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, where some Albanian travelers recognized it as the missing fresco of Shkodra (also called Scutari). Albanian Catholics celebrate both feast days: Our Lady of Good Counsel on April 26 and the Lady of Shkodër on the third Sunday in October. On April 25, 1993, Pope John Paul II blessed the first stone of a new sanctuary in Shkodër and donated a new reproduction of the fresco. "Mother of Good Counsel, return to us. On the path of peace lead us" (old Albanian hymn).
